Description

The Dokra Lady Diya is a decorative oil lamp that combines tribal sculpture with traditional lighting. The design features a beautifully stylized tribal lady figurine holding or supporting a small diya (oil lamp).

The sculpture showcases the distinctive textures and intricate patterns typical of Dokra craftsmanship. When the diya is lit, it creates a warm glow that enhances the artistic form of the figurine, making it both a functional and decorative piece.

Craftsmanship & Origin

Dokra (Dhokra) craft is an ancient tribal metal casting tradition practiced by artisans in West Bengal. The craft uses the lost-wax casting technique, where a wax model is first created to shape the design.

The wax model is coated with a mixture of clay and rice husk to form a mold. When heated, the wax melts away and molten metal is poured into the mold cavity. Natural materials such as coal, tree resin, and nut oil are used during the process. After cooling, the clay mold is broken to reveal the final handcrafted sculpture. Because the mold is broken after casting, each Dokra Lady Diya is unique.
